It’s no secret that the biggest obstacle an eCommerce store faces as opposed to it’s bricks and mortar counterpart is trust. In a bricks and mortar store, a shopper is able to touch and feel the products, look the merchant in the eye and shake their hand. When a shopper is browsing an eCommerce store, it is harder for them to gauge whether they can trust the business or not.
There are, however, a few key indicators that stand out to customers and let them know that your online store is safe. The first (and most important) indicator of a secure shop is an SSL Certificate.
We are at an all time peak of online scams and shoppers are more wary than ever about security online, especially when they’re entering their card details.
As an EKM customer, you are automatically eligible to a free SSL certificate, however, if you’re looking to go that extra mile to show your customers your shop is secure we would recommend upgrading your SSL.
What’s the difference?
SSL certificates vary in their level of security. Higher level SSL’s are much harder to obtain and to be accepted for a higher level SSL Certificate, your website must undergo a number of checks. Here’s the SSL you’re currently on versus a premium SSL:
Domain Validation SSL (free to all EKM shop owners)
This is the lowest level of authentication used to issue SSL Certificates. The Certificate Authority (CA) will issue this certificate to anyone listed as the domain admin contact in the public record associated with the domain name. As a result, DV certificates are issued very quickly. No company information is checked or displayed on the certificate, making it easier for criminals to gain this type of certificate from irresponsible CA’s.
+ Easy to obtain
+ Fast issuance
Extended Validation SSL
This is the gold standard in SSL certificates. EV verification guidelines, drawn upon by the CA/Browser Forum, require the CA to run a much more rigorous identity check on the organisation or individual applying for the certificate. Sites with an EV SSL certificate have a green browser address bar and a field appears with the name of the legitimate website owner and the name of the CA that issued the certificate.
+ Use EV SSL for the highest value display of online trust
+ Comes with a green browser address bar
+ Increase user trust and lower bounce rates and shopping cart abandonments
+ Recoup the extra cost of an EV certificate in the form of increased revenue
+ Strengthen your credibility and brand by showcasing your commitment to online security
How to upgrade your SSL
