Images on the internet need to have as small a file size as possible. The bigger the file size the longer it will take people to download your images.
EKM will automatically create all the thumbnails needed for your store, all you need to do is provide it with the large version of your product or category image. However, EKM has a file size limit of 350k for each of your images and therefore if your images are very large you may need to perform some file re-sizing techniques on them first.
To check the size of a file in Windows simply right click on the file and select Properties. You should now be able to see the size of the file along with some other information.
There are a couple of ways you can reduce your image size:
1. Crop your images to remove any unnecessary portions of the picture.
2. Physically reduce the width and height of your image. Images more than 800 pixels wide are usually too large
3. Increase the compression on the image. Around 70% - 90% is best for JPEG files.
4. Reduce the number of colours in the image.
All photo editing software will have a command for changing the pixel dimensions of an image. Most digital cameras will come with some sort of photo editing software. Look for a command called Image Size, Resize or Resample. When you use this command you will be presented with a dialog box for entering the exact pixels you wish to use.
Although time-consuming this is a very important part of building a website and so it’s a good practice to get used to. We recommend that your images should be between 30k to 100k in file size.
If you do not have any software that can re-size your images we recommend PIXresizer which is a free tool which will easily allow you to re-size and compress your images. It will also allow you to perform batch conversions, allowing you to convert all your images to the correct size automatically without you having to do each image one by one.
