A sub-domain is a subsection of your original domain. Having sub-domains splits your domain into different sections. For instance, you may wish to have one shop to sell on and another site the you do not wish to sell on.
If your original domain was www.myshop.co.uk, you may wish to register a domain to a shop which customers can actually buy from. An example of what you may call this subdomain would be shop.myshop.co.uk.
