[intro]When you have completed this Guide, you’ll understand how to change the design of your online shop and will be able to determine the difference between responsive themes and those with a separate mobile template. You’ll also know how to hide your online shop behind a password wall to prevent anyone seeing it until it’s time for your EKM online shop to launch![/intro]
The first step to creating your EKM online shop is to apply a Theme, as this applies the bare bones of your shop design before you add your own branding and images to it. On EKM, the Themes have been divided into industry types as a guideline to help you select the right design for your brand and your products. However, most themes can be made to apply simply by adding your own logo and design images which compliment your brand.
Selecting your Theme
1. To change your theme, log into your account and click the Design button:
2. On this page, click the Edit button on the far left beneath the largest Theme image:
3. Select the first option, Change Theme:
4. This will take you the Themes area, populated with every Theme currently available on the EKM platform. This page displays the Featured Themes first by default, as these are the latest designs to be released by our Design Team:
Down the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a grey menu bar where you can select your Theme based on your industry if you choose.
When selecting your Theme, ensure that the menu of the Theme is how you want it to be going forward. There are lots of different kinds of menus, but these cannot be edited as they are native to the Theme. However, all other aspects of a theme, including headers, design images and editable elements can be edited by our Tweaks Team if need be.
When you see a Theme you like, click the Preview button to look at the Theme in more Detail, or click Apply Theme to add this Theme to your EKM online shop.
What is a Responsive Theme?
It’s highly recommended that you select a Responsive Theme to begin with. These are the Themes highlighted with a mobile phone preview.
A Responsive Theme is a Theme that can be applied to your EKM online shop where the design remains the same whether the site is being viewed on a mobile, laptop, desktop computer or another device. A Responsive Theme provides an excellent user experience as research has confirmed that more users than ever are using mobile devices such as phones and tablets over laptops and desktop computers to shop online.
It’s also recommended that the more recent the Theme, the more use you will have from it - we recommend that you upgrade your Theme every two years - this ensures that your online shop design will be unaffected by upgrades to browsers, user experience research and a host of other factors which can affect how your site displays to potential customers.
Some of the older Themes we have on offer are not Responsive, and instead offer a separate Mobile template as well as a standard Desktop Theme. These Themes will be eventually discontinued as their layout and structure pertain to older standards for user experience and browser compatibility.
Testing your Theme
5. To see how your EKM online shop looks with the Theme applied, you need to click the Settings tab on the top right:
6. Beneath the Shop Settings header on the top left of the screen, you need to click Domain Name:
7. This will reveal the current Domain Name of your Shop, which will look something like this:
Every EKM online shop has a domain name like this to begin with, as technically the shop is live the moment the account is opened. The domain name consists partly of your Account ID and this domain name is visible on the front end of your EKM online shop until you apply a domain name to it.
Copy the domain name of your shop and paste into a new tab in your browser, before pressing enter:
This will reveal how your EKM online shop looks to customers at the moment. When experimenting with different Themes, it’s a good idea to keep this browser tab open so you can view how the different Themes display until you’ve discovered one that you’re happy with.
Applying Password Protect
Whilst you are creating your site, it’s a good idea to hide your website behind a password wall until the website is complete, so you can launch the website to the public when it is ready.
8. To do this, click the Features tab in the top middle of your screen:
9. You then need to install the Password Protect feature, by clicking the icon:
10. Click the green Install Feature button:
11. You will then be presented with the different options for setting Password Protect on your EKM online shop:
Enable Password Protect
Tick this box to activate Password Protect on your EKM online shop.
Enable Multiple Usernames and Passwords
If you require members of staff to still view the shop whilst it is being created, tick this box to create Usernames and Passwords for each of them, clicking the green Add button for each entry. For the purpose of simply hiding this site from view whilst it’s built, you probably will not need this functionality.
This field will be pre-populated with a password which is hidden from view by default. Click the three stars within this field to reveal the default password and instead, populate this field with a password that you will remember.
Enable Webpage Password Protection
You can either Select All here to hide all of the Webpages on your EKM online shop at once or select which individual pages should be hidden and which should be left visible.
When you have completed the required fields, simply click the green Save button to activate the password wall, which when applied, will look like this:
This is useful if you are planning a big site launch as you can leave a webpage detailing your location and details of your launch visible, but leave everything else hidden until you wish to officially make your EKM online shop public.
